Saint Jerome, a scholar, biblical translator, and proponent of monasticism, retreated to the desert for contemplation. It was during this period that he grappled with vivid and tempting visions, a facet he vividly described in his writings. Vasari’s painting captures this inner struggle, as Jerome fixes his gaze on a crucifix, surrounded by personifications of his temptations: Venus, the goddess of love, accompanied by mischievous cupids. While Venus appears to be in retreat, one stubborn cupid still aims his arrow towards the saint.
This work bears a fascinating feature—it remains unfinished. The faint grid, traced in black chalk, serves as a testament to the meticulous process of enlarging and transferring the preparatory drawing onto the panel. This lends a unique insight into Vasari’s artistic methodology.
